What is not yours is the copyright to that painting.

The copyright has an independent value; such as to a publisher, who wants to use the image for commercial purposes. I retain the copyright, though you may negotiate to buy that too.

This is very much a legal and standard way of handling art sales, although very few dealers admit it.
